Reddit: towards a new conversational web?

The pressure of algorithms, the instability of platforms, and the standardisation of AI-generated content are fuelling a quest for unfiltered, authentic information. While the battle for attention continues to be fought with viral videos, a text-based platform long perceived as an American geek staple has quietly emerged as a new strategic hub: Reddit.

The rediscovery of forums in the conversational era

The second most visited website in the United States and ninth most visited worldwide, Reddit has seen a meteoric rise in France this year, with a jump of more than 90% in the number of active weekly users in one year and 3.8 million monthly users. This success led to Reddit’s first national communication campaign in France this summer, entitled ‘Entre inconnus, on peut tout se dire’ (Among strangers, we can say anything).

This rise reflects internet users’ interest in information that is disseminated less by the fame of an influencer or the virality of a video than by the quality of the contribution and the value of the community. On Reddit, the code is simple: the upvote and downvote system subjects each piece of content – whether it’s a question, an anecdote or a link – to the ruthless judgement of the thematic community (the subreddit). This mechanism encourages in-depth exchanges and non-corporate opinions. Spaces such as r/france or question-and-answer subreddits (r/AskFrance) have become barometers of public opinion, a place where brands are discussed without the filters of customer service or official communications. In short, people come to Reddit to seek authentic answers to their questions from other humans.

Authenticity boosted by AI

While valuing human and community discourse as a source of relevant information, Reddit’s importance has increased tenfold with the advent of conversational AI. These models are not only trained on Wikipedia or traditional media, but also draw heavily on Reddit conversations to generate nuanced, contextual and natural responses. Reddit’s discussion threads, structured as Q&A and subject to community consensus via voting, provide a wealth of material for training AGIs.

Above all, major agreements, such as the multi-year licence agreement signed between Google and Reddit in February 2024, have formalised the integration of this data into AI models and search results.

This phenomenon creates a new reality: what your customers, consumers, partners or employees say about your company or brand in a subreddit is no longer confined to that niche. These contributions, if they are upvoted and recognised, become building blocks of knowledge integrated directly into the responses given by ChatGPT or Gemini and search engines.

Taking part in this conversational future

Understanding and mastering Reddit is therefore essential to influencing digital truth before it is formulated by AI. However, brands’ approach to Reddit cannot be reduced to a simple transposition of advertising tactics. Communities are quick to punish self-promotion. To engage with them, brands must make valuable contributions and not seek to distribute messages.

The first step is obviously to know and follow discussions closely in order to monitor the sector and feed your insights. Many brands are already developing products in light of these conversations. Then start interacting and contributing. But the phenomena of brigading (coordinated downvotes or attacks) and trolling are real. To preserve the company’s karma while taking part in discussions about your brand, transparency, the value of your contribution and the authenticity of your words are essential.
